wood Disclaimer

The wood used to create a product may slightly differ from the wood used in samples or product photography due to the natural characteristics of the material.

Being a natural material, wood has variations, including knots, texture, and grain variations. We cannot control or guarantee the exact appearance of any board or product. Moreover, we do not make any representation, warranty, and/or guarantee concerning the precise colour, patina, or appearance of the finishes of any product. All our products are handcrafted, and we cannot guarantee that any product will look precisely like another.

In the dryer months of the year, it is possible for customers to experience shrinking, cracking, and warping in their furniture. When spring arrives and the air moistens, the wood settles again, until the next dry spell or season.

Unfortunately, In the Wooden furniture manufacturing industry, one of the major challenges we face is managing the uncontrollable fluctuating atmospheric conditions, which directly impact the moisture content in the wood we work with. In Kwazulu-Natal, summers are extremely humid, causing the wood to absorb moisture until it reaches equilibrium. Conversely, in winter, the air is much drier, leading the wood to release moisture until it reaches equilibrium.

We try our best to design our items with appropriate bracing as well as use certain joining techniques that combat bending and splitting. We use Quality Adhesives that are designed to be able to withstand harsher climates. To minimize the wood’s absorption and release of moisture, we thoroughly seal the items on all surfaces, sides, and edges with quality sealers and varnishes. However, most sealers, whether solvent, oil, or water-based, cannot fully encase the wood to prevent all moisture from escaping or being absorbed from the air.

Based on the above description, we try our best to avoid these issues however we cannot be held liable for any bending, cracking, shrinking, or warping of the furniture that may occur due to Atmospheric conditions.

Outdoor Furniture

For Outdoor furniture that is exposed to the elements, we recommend that the wood be maintained twice yearly with light sanding and a recoat of a Quality Exterior Sealer.

The three biggest causes of any Wood Deterioration indoors and outdoors:
– Exposure to UV light
– Exposure to chemicals, including water, solvents, cleaners
– Physical abuse — abrasion, impact, use not as intended.

Painted Furniture

Furniture painted with Zaplac Duco Paint or Polyurethane paint requires special care. These types of paint typically take around 20 days to fully cure, so it’s important to take extra precautions during this time to allow proper curing. If you have painted desks, table tops, vanity tops, doors, drawers, or other furniture that is used frequently, it will be subject to wear and tear that is beyond our control. We recommend that you take extra care of painted items that are used regularly. If your furniture has small bumps or minor scratches, touch-ups can be done. However, please note that Scotsmen Woodwork & Joinery will not be responsible for furniture that is damaged due to misuse or negligence.

Drawings and Designs

Before any manufacturing commences, all design drawings must be carefully checked, approved, and signed by the customer. By signing the design, you are agreeing that you have checked the sizing and agree with the measurements that are shown on the design. Once the design is signed, Scotsmen Woodwork & Joinery will as accurately as possible follow those specific measurements. Any design changes made once manufacturing has begun will require an updated drawing and will incur additional costs.

Installations

Scotsmen Woodwork & Joinery will always use their combined skills to as accurately as possible measure the spaces in which pieces of furniture are to be installed.
However, Scotsmen Woodwork & Joinery will not be held responsible for any unidentified changes that may need to be made during installation due to building irregularities of the client’s premises in which the piece is being installed, examples being, walls that are not straight, corners that are not at correct 90-degree angles, floors that are not flat. We will do our best to work around the issues we are confronted with, however, if major changes are needed the client will be responsible for the cost of these changes.
